The Core Capacities of LogicSmart

Each intelligence has a core set of capacities which are involved in its actual functioning. These are almost like “sub-intelligences”. If you are wanting to improve, enhance, or otherwise strengthen an intelligence, you must work at the level of developing the full range of its capacities.

Study these capacities and think about how you use them in your life and you’ll gain a fuller sense and understanding of your own LogicSmart.

The first task for more fully understanding and enhancing your LogicSmart capacities is learning to speak the unique language of this intelligence; that is, learning to decipher its special jargon, to understand its vernacular, and being willing to immerse yourself in its various operating modalities.

The language and operating modality of LogicSmart is related to finding and understanding the many patterns that are part of your life, such as number patterns, thought patterns, and word patterns.

Once you understand the different dimensions and aspects of LogicSmart it is important that you focus on using them on a fairly regular basis. As with any capacity we have developed in our life, regular, consistent practice makes perfect.

Following is a description of each capacity and a place for you to type your reflections on how each of the capacities tend to show up in your daily life, AND what you can do to exercise it or use is more.

(Just type your thoughts in the boxes provided. At the bottom is a "print button" so you can save your work.)

ABSTRACT PATTERN RECOGNITION

This is the capacity to discern patterns in the environment around you. For example, can you find definite repeating patterns in the natural world--spiral patterns, star patterns, triangles, and so on? Can you easily recognize architectural patterns or the pattern scheme someone used in laying the tiles in their bathroom? Are you able to decipher codes and quickly understand symbolic logic?

blue arrow INDUCTIVE REASONING

Inductive Reasoning is the logical thought process that moves from the part to an understanding of the whole. In philosophy this is the Aristotelean method. In TV detective shows this is Jessica Fletcher in Murder She Wrote. She spends the entire show gathering clues for who committed the murder. In the last five minutes of the program she masterfully puts the clues together and figures out the culprit!

This capacity is the logical thought process that moves from the whole to an understanding of the parts. In philosophy this is the Platonic method. In TV detective shows this is Colombo At the beginning of the show he knows who committed the murder. He then spends the remainder of the show gathering the evidence to prove it!

DISCERNING RELATIONSHIPS AND CONNECTIONS

Developing these capacities will help you sort through and make sense out of the increasingly complex data that bombards you everyday. This capacity involves being able to evaluate this montage of information and find those things which link, conjoin, co-mingle, and are associated with other things that are meaningful and important to you and to discard the rest.

PERFORMING COMPLEX CALCULATIONS

This the capacity most of us have traditionally and probably exclusively associated with LogicSmart. However, this capacity goes far beyond what you learned in school Yes, it does involve the capacity to deal with numerical relationships and mathematical processes and operations, but it also involves the ability to utilize these things in everyday, practical living!

SCIENTIFIC REASONING

Scientific Reasoning is a capacity that is in no way limited to pure scientific pursuits. The basic scientific method is the process of observing, judging, weighing up, deciding, and acting.Every time you successfully solve a problem you are facing in your life you use this “scientific” method.

You first of all observe all of the facts related to your problem. Next you make a judgment about which facts are relevant and then you “weigh” the facts in terms of which are MOST relevant to the problem you are trying to solve. You then make a decision about the logical course of action. And, finally, you act on it!is the capacity most of us have traditionally and probably exclusively associated with LogicSmart.
